yes, somehow I thought we were talking about lighting up buildings from the inside

For streetlighting, I would probably get bulbs from Model Power and scratchbuild?

Can you be more specific about what type of lighting you are looking for. I have all kinds of lighting in my layout and engines.

For building inside, most easy, even with bad soldering iron
are all smd led's with specification PLCC-2.
Depending of the color, you choose the led and connect it inline
with a resistor about 560 Ohm, that will be good up to 12 Volt with
no prob.
If it is still to much bride, just increase the resistor, up to
3300 Ohm everything should be visible.

I was thinking about getting some of the new LED type christmas lightsets..now I have a really stupid question.. How many people actually run their trains in the dark? I got all kinds of lamps on poles for the one layout and was worried about lighting it but.. would I really need to? It needs lights around the fences and at the gate (one for Lili Marlene to stand next to)but I have a hard enough time seeing things with the lights on.

My wife and I had a moment of clarity about this too. The real issue is train cars - they tend to be pretty tough to light unless you get Passman to do it, and then what is the point of lighting a building if all your passengers sit in darkness? So, we plan to light the stuff that is lit during daytime - Train head/tail lights where practical, and signals.

Andy,

To answer your question, I should have mentioned outside lighting in the first post. I have figures out the economical way of lights the buildings with LED's and sort. I'm just having a hard time with street lights, signal, markers and such. I have been able to find so but they are in the range of $20 a piece. Really pricly in my opinion. Thanks for any direction you can provide.

Kelly, I get home late, so my layout look too dark. That's when I started to light up my layout. I think it looks pretty cool with lights. I have street lamps, lighted buildings, and lighted signals. I also have engines with ditch lights, and cars with FREDS.

The cheapest way is to make your own using smds, and brass tubing. Here is a link to where you can find all the supplies. If you do a search, you can find smds cheaper.

Andy I was thinking the same way..I dont want to put tail lights on autos either. I do like layouts that light up like Shamoo's, but I need to spend the money on things like buildings and bridges. I will have to make things to accept lights later when times are better. I seen in Germany the really neat backdrop that turns into night scene. I could see someone with a train room with good lighting that dims and a fastclock doing operations day and night, but my little spur will have to be dark. I could always do era 2 and say its a blackout.
