Hi John,
It doesn't look like you had to cut the tray to get the decoder to fit. I have a F59 PHI I want to install a decoder in and have both a Digirax DZ125 and a new CT Elektronic 75. The latter is smaller since it has no covering.

Henri, I had to cut the tray with the DZ125. Its still too big, but with the CT decoder, you dont have to. I would go with the DZ125, because its cheap compare to the CT. Save the CT for the SD70s or GP7 where its small size is a must.

John, on the DZ125, it has the BEMF, turn it off. It will overheat the motor. BEMF doesnt work with coreless motors.

Thanks for the tip John. Do you know if the Marklin 2-8-2 motors are coreless?

Thanks,
John

John, they are not coreless. They are either 3 pole or 5 pole. Just dont get a Uhlebrock decoder on a Marklin. They will overheat the decoder and shut down.

Thanks John. I will be using a DZ125 in my Marklin. I sure appreciate the wisdom and experience of those who have gone before - what I don't know would fill volumes!

John and John, the DZ125 out of the red plastic ought to be damn close the the same 'height' as the CT.

Lundy-man, try and save that small sq inch CT for a cramped place.

Turning off the BEMF functions (CV 55, 57 and one other if I am not mistaken) still did not turn the functions off on my testing on a 5 pole PM motor. I could clearly see the BEMF effects on my oscilloscope. Digitrax, if I am not mistaken, does not turn the BEMF on by default. Make sure Momentum is off (All DCC Programming track routines, like NCE's Cabs do in Standard Programming) do this in a prompted text menu. Or, you can program CV3 & 4 to 0. This is an NMRA standard for all decoder manufactures. BEMF is not a standard so everyone uses their own CVs for that.

Haven't run a Digitrax on the AZLs but have run the Lenz Mini's (buy the Silver one as the more expensive Gold only adds support for the external PS1 or what ever the power supply model is). They DO have BEMF defaulted on and you cannot shut it off. Mine have run OK.

Hi Jeff,
Yes, I will use the CT decoders for AZL GP7s and the SDs. So the BEMF should be turned off on the DZ125. That's good to know.

Thanks,
John

Jeff, it used to be that you void the Digitrax warranty if you took of the wrapping. I dont know if this is still true. Also, are you saying that you cant turn off the BEMF on the 125?

On the wiring, yes, I did make a mistake, but I fix it by programming. I didnt want to re-solder the wires.

Maybe you void the warranty but for $20 a 125, I'd rather have it fit and have better air circulation than worry about the hassle of a warranty return. Don't you have to send them $10 anyway ? (plus mailing, etc.)

Nope, you just have to send in the decoder. There is no charge for exchanging the decoder. The only time they charge me is on a 123, and I open the wrapping.
