Length of passenger cars and RDC? was created by hokenstrom
Hi!

I wonder if anyone owning a RDC and/or some US-style passenger cars could measure how long one RDC is and how long two passenger cars are from coupling to coupling? The reason why I am asking is that I am building a few railcar barges/ferries for my layout and I don't want to make them too short for at least two passenger cars.
In short:
1 - How long is a RDC?
2 - How long are two US style passenger cars?

Attached is a photo of my first demo version of a car barge. It's 32cm long and 6cm wide with three tracks, it's rather narrow and the spacing is tight but it can carry 3x4 cars. I have used 5mm balsa wood for center and dressed it with 0.5mm sheet styrene, the track is three MTL flex sections and I will use either plastic or metal pins as pollards. I have added 4mm high railings - since it's a freight barge I think I don't have to follow any realistic safety heights for the railings.

RDC standard length was 85 ft but shorty RDC4 was 73 feet
passenger cars very a great deal depending on period you are modelling and whether 1st class or branch line service heavy weight or streamliner. so choose from 50, feet

Thank you for the reply!
85ft corresponds to approximately 11cm so my 32cm long barges will suffice just fine.
